New Art Network launches it’s new online exhibition space featuring a solo show by Sophie Percival.

Everyone wants to be famous and everybody wants to be in Hollywood. But what of those who actually live there? Sophie Percival recently spent time in the city turned her attention to the architecture of the place. What resounds in Percival’s work is the focused and uncomprising attention with which she examines these houses. Each seen from almost exactly the same distance and with a bright unnatural glare highlights the bizarre differences in each house and reveals their artifical and hyperreal nature. Architect John Lautner remarked that whilst driving down boulevard in Beverley Hills the buildings were so ugly they made him physically sick, the idea that we build dreams in order to escape reality becomes apparent, but what does this say about us – the dreamers?

who you are, where you’re from, why/how you got into art, what your
art interests are…?

We are an artist couple who met whilst working at the Liverpool Biennial in 2006 just after graduating from art school. We were both working with other people for years before we started working together, both of us collaborate very naturally. The humour and enthusiasm we see in our work comes in part from having a laugh with people. We put on events with our friends and over time got to working together as a couple. Artistically we’re interested in relationships between people and the energy and creativity the relationships can produce. Like with couples, how their relationship can take on a personality itself and the different roles objects play for people.

the exhibition:
how did the exhibition come about?
where did you get the idea for the show? any specific influences,
areas of research?

Well first and foremost this body of work came out of us thinking about our relationship and sex. We’ve always shared a lot of interests but when we were in California for 3 months in 2010 we were very inspired by couples we saw who had really created something that had blossomed from the internal logic of their relationship. There’s a couple in LA whose interests led to them set up a gallery then a freak animal farm and finally the Museum of Death which is an interesting trajectory. Their interests seem to always have been focussed around these really complicated objects, with awkward histories and real emotional effects. And eventually, with the museum, their passions can sustain them.
They are an interesting contrast to Fred and Rose West whose passion for objects had them try to steal the farm gate where they first had sex and keep a lot of terrifying, personal relics in the fabric of their house. You have to go through a lot of emotion when finding positive elements of their relationship. How they related to objects is fascinating. Internally a couple is something that can be unfathomable or seem conspiratorial from the outside. But the relationship can be thought of as a third person, or a living object.
We have been interested for a long time in Jeff Koons’ show ‘Made in heaven’ from the early 90s. The work of Ken Price and Lynda Benglis and Japanese love hotels inspired us too. I (Roxy) also work part time selling sex toys which provides interesting research!

how did the artwork come about?

Our constant dialogue means we love to make works that amuse us and contain both of our personalities. The video work ‘Giddiness and Well-being’ came about through drawing and collage work we had been doing. They are both important methods that we use to develop ideas. It seemed natural to have live footage intermingled with animation and video effects. The performative process undertaken to make the video was pretty fun….. We have a lot of energy when making work and have always worked across various disciplines so the show features a variety of mediums. We were doing sculpture work during the same period as making the video and experimented with using our voices to make the soundtrack for the first time. This allowed the different elements to play off each other. The sculptures started off inspired by our pants and gradually took on a life of their own.

what would you like people to take from the show?
We don’t mind if they don’t take anything, we’re happy to have all of our love objects back.

finally:
how was it putting on the show? any problems? now it’s done how do you
feel about it?

Putting on the show was a pleasant experience as we got pretty organised. We felt there was a positive response to the show, a lot of smiles! It was especially great to have our friends and family see the show and really enjoy it. Their support is very important to us. Making work like this allows us to spend even more time together which we really like! Creating a solo show was great for us because we could finally see all of the work together and gain some closure on it which allows for new ideas to flow.

what are you up to next?
We recently made a video for a show in Liverpool called ‘My Five New Friends’, commissioned by Oliver Braid. It’s started some new ideas for us that might mean we make a lot more video and we are doing one of the 30 shows in 30 days at Studio 1.1 this summer which will be great.
